A good picnic does not depend on a magazine-style basket. It depends on comfort, food that is easy to share, and nobody being cold, thirsty or in a hurry.
This list separates what you probably already have at home from what is worth having over time. We do not name brands or prices, because they change all the time: what matters is the type of item.
What you already have at home
- A tablecloth, an old sheet or a blanket that can get dirty.
- Reusable plates, cups and cutlery already in your kitchen.
- A big bag, backpack or tote instead of a basket.
- Cloth or paper napkins, and a bag to take all the rubbish home.
- Containers with lids for fruit, sandwiches and snacks.
- A light jacket for each of you, because late afternoon cools down quickly.
What is worth having, if you ever want to
- A blanket with a waterproof side, for damp ground.
- A small cooler bag, to keep food fresh for a few hours.
- A flask for coffee, tea or cold water.
- Two light cushions or folding seats, if you do not enjoy sitting on the ground.
- A small torch or battery light for the walk back when it gets dark.
How to save money without losing the mood
Start with what you already own and only buy something after you have used the picnic two or three times. What you did not miss does not need to go on the list.
If you do buy, check neighbourhood markets and second-hand shops: good blankets, baskets and containers often turn up there. Always compare before deciding.
The detail that charms most costs almost nothing: a hidden note, a short playlist, fruit cut with care.
An easy menu to go with the kit
- Sandwiches or wraps made at home.
- Washed, cut fruit.
- Something to share, like cheese, bread or nuts.
- A simple sweet treat for the end.
- Water for both of you, plus a drink you enjoy.
A note on transparency
This guide has no shopping links. If we ever recommend products with an affiliate link, we will say so clearly on the page itself. Nobody needs to buy anything to have a lovely picnic.
